Insulation installation

Why is insulation important?

Insulation keeps the heat in when it’s cold and the heat out when it’s hot.

Homes built before 2000 generally don’t have much, if any, insulation. This means that New Zealand homes are often cold, damp, energy-inefficient and expensive to run.

Many homeowners attempt to fix these problems by putting in heat pumps, dehumidifiers and other devices instead of first addressing the fundamental problem – little or no insulation.

Insulating your home is the most effective measure you can take to keep your home comfortable year round and to save money on energy bills. A well-insulated home will be a warmer, healthier and more pleasant home for you and your family. It’s one of the smartest investments you can make in your home.

Insulation insights

  • Around one quarter of New Zealand homes are not insulated. Most homes are inadequately insulated

  • A fully insulated house needs up to a third less energy to heat it as an un-insulated house

  • Families living in insulated homes had fewer sick days and doctor visits

(According to a Wellington School of Medicine survey)

  • Many older homes don’t get as warm inside as the recommended 18°c. Indoor temperatures below 16°c increase the risk of respiratory disease

Knauf Earthwool

Earthwool glasswool insulation ceiling segments – this range is a new generation of softer, safer and more environmentally friendly glasswool insulation. Knauf Insulation’s advanced compression packaging reduces handling time and also the risk of damage in transit, storage and on-site.

Segments are the traditional insulation product for ceilings. Earthwool glasswool insulation is supplied in pre-cut rectangular sizes at 430mm width to suit the most common ceiling joist centre.

The ceiling segments are recommended for installation from either below ceiling joists (i.e. within the room) or from above ceiling joists (i.e. within the ceiling space).

Earthwool glasswool insulation segments can also be used in cathedral style roofs and raked ceilings. These are generally ‘skillion’ style roof construction where the ceiling line and roof line are parallel. The Earthwool glasswool insulation ceiling blanket range offers better choices for skillion design applications.
